The United Nations DPI/NGO annual conference will be held in Melbourne in late August/early September 2010 on the theme of "Global Health Challenges: Achieving the Millennium Development Goals".
The international community has agreed to implement the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by 2015. Three of the MDGs relate directly to health. This conference will provide a unique forum for NGOs to discuss challenges and solutions to global health issues. The deliberations at the Conference and its outcomes are expected to inform the forthcoming UN review of the Millinnium Development Goals scheduled to take place in the latter half of 2010.
The conference will emphasize the multidisciplinary, multifaceted issues in fostering health, not just managing disease. Additionally, the conference aims to harness the energy of those passionate about issues of previous conferences such as human rights, disarmament, climate change, human security and dignity, and through collaboration, help them understand their role/responsibility, to utilise their knowledge, to help mitigate the underlying causes of illness, and help create a healthy world.
It is only the third time in the Conference's 63 year history that the conference has been held outside New York. For more information about the conference please contact Christopher Woodthorpe, Director, United Nations Information Centre at
