About CMT
CMT is a neurodegenerative condition predominantly causing motor neuronal degeneration with slow conduction times. However, many of those affected also have sensory nerve degeneration. While not as yet curable, the CMT Australia website has links to various resources for both those affected and for treating practitioners.
CMT Australia has recently revised its patient information brochure for distribution through health care providers.
The following is an extract from the brochure:
“CMT or Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, also known as Hereditary Motor and Sensory Neuropathy (HMSN), is a common but frequently undiagnosed condition.CMT is not a contagious disease, but it is an inherited neurological disease with some types having a 50% chance of being passed on to other generations in the same families. Research has indicated that as many as 1 in 2,500 people in Australia could have CMT.
At present there are over 100 different types of CMT genes which can result in varied symptoms. The severity and age that CMT becomes evident can vary a great deal from person to person.
There is no known cure for CMT, however, but extensive research is being undertaken in Australia and overseas to find one.Many people who have CMT are not aware that there is an association in Australia offering support for those of us with this condition.”
