Call for peace in Gaza [AMENDED]

The Australian Federation of Medical Women uncompromisingly states that anti-semitism and Islamophobia, as well as acts of terrorism are abhorrent and utterly unacceptable.

Medical neutrality is a recognised moral and ethical principle that all doctors globally must uphold; the importance of upholding medical neutrality in conflict has been documented in the Geneva Convention and more recently, in the Colombo Declaration.

As an apolitical, humanitarian and egalitarian organisation, AFMW remains committed to this principle, in line with other medical organisations such as Médecins Sans Frontières, the World Medical Association and the World Health Organisation.

The conflict in Gaza is continuing to escalate.

We are extremely concerned about the ongoing physical and psychological safety of our medical colleagues (including staff from Doctors Without Borders) in Gaza, as well as the dwindling supplies available to treat patients adequately in a mass casualty scenario such as this.

We are also extremely concerned about the ongoing and potential harm to civilians in Gaza – innocent men, women and children, including the Israeli hostages yet unreturned.

As such, we call for a ceasefire so that humanitarian aid can be delivered urgently into Gaza.

We call for hospitals and medical centres to be declared neutral and safe zones, and for basic necessities such as water, gas and electricity to be provided to hospitals and medical centres so that medical aid can be continued to be provided to those in need.

We call for the immediate safe passage of all civilians, including women and children, out of Gaza.

Action needs to be taken now.

We strongly urge this government to seek and deliver these outcomes.
