The Medical Women’s Society of the ACT and Region held its 2026 Planning Meeting with productive and constructive discussion on 1st February 2026.
The meeting focused on key activities and priorities for the year ahead.
1. Oral History Project
The Committee spent time reviewing the next steps for the Oral History Project, including identifying new interviewees. Members discussed a range of potential contributors whose experiences would add to the existing collection and help document the history of medical women in the ACT.
2. Research Projects
The group reflected on previous support provided to Professor Louise Stone for her research into bullying and harassment in the medical profession.
Members also considered possible new areas of research involvement, including work related to supporting women experiencing domestic violence.
3. ANU Elective Bursary 2026
The Committee confirmed its ongoing support for the ANU Elective Bursary, which assists medical students undertaking elective placements. Planning for the 2026 round will continue over the coming months.
4. ANU Essay Awards 2026
The Committee discussed arrangements for the 2026 Essay Awards and ongoing collaboration with Professor Christine Phillips.
An update was provided on previous award recipients, including their current training locations and specialties.
5. 2026 Social and Sporting Activities
Members agreed to continue offering informal social and physical-activity events throughout the year. Proposed activities include:
- A croquet social event
- Group hiking
- Participation in parkrun events, including the 100th Bungendore parkrun and the RACGP parkrun
6. Key Dates for 2026
The Committee reviewed the calendar for the year, with the next major event being the International Women’s Day celebration, planned as a cocktail party on 10 March 2026.
