Last Friday 10th June, the National Union of Students released the results and recommendations of their “Talk About It” survey. The survey questioned over 1500 female university students on their perceptions of safety, their experiences of sexual harassment and assault, and their experiences of how it was dealt with once it was reported. Amongst the survey findings, it was revealed 17 per cent of respondents had experienced rape, 12 per cent had experienced attempted rape and 11 per cent had experienced assault by penetration.
The survey results have led to the NUS proposing 30 recommendations which form a ‘Safe Universities Blueprint’ – combining Australian best-practice, international initiatives and suggestions put forward by the women, tertiary and youth sectors.
