MWS ACT & Region Dinner at Café Stepping Stone

Here’s a recap of a recent MWS ACT & Region dinner.

Café Stepping Stone is a wonderful initiative providing training for migrant and refugee women with a vegetarian menu that is inspired and constantly evolving. We were fortunate that they agreed to cater for our recent Dinner meeting featuring an inspirational Medical woman, Dr Barbara Orchard. Barbara has had a varied career culminating as a Public Health Physician in Canberra.

She is also a noted War Historian and lecturer on Australian Military History, and was a former Australian Test Cricketer! Barbara’s talk, entitled “The invisible Enemy – the impacts of Malaria on the war in PNG” was fascinating on many levels.

Malaria was certainly a key factor in the capacity of the troops to perform, and when the Senior Officers mandated the unpopular mosquito-control measures the impact was astonishing!
