Celebrating the stories, struggles, and strengths of women in medicine in ACT region

Held on Thursday, 30th October 2025, from 6:00–8:00 pm at The Canberra Hospital (Building 8), the ANU Medical Student Women’s Juggle Event 2025 was more than an evening of connection—it was a vibrant mixture of shared wisdom, laughter, and heartfelt dialogue. With doctors and medical students gathered under one roof, the event created a safe and inspiring space to explore the many facets of life in medicine.

The event’s name—The Juggle—reflected both its dynamic “speed-dating” style format, where small groups of 4–5 students rotated between tables to speak with different doctors, and the broader metaphor of balancing the many priorities that come with a career in medicine.

A thoughtfully curated slideshow of conversation prompts sparked meaningful exchanges throughout the evening. Questions like:

  • What do you enjoy outside of medicine?” reminded us that creativity, sport, travel, and family life are not distractions—they’re vital sources of joy and resilience.
  • What aspects of medicine are you interested in?” revealed the diverse passions in the room—from rural health and surgery to global health and advocacy—each voice adding depth to the collective vision of care.
  • What do you think is the biggest challenge female-identifying individuals face in your career?” opened honest discussions about systemic bias, work-life balance, and the emotional and mental load often carried quietly. These reflections were met with empathy and solidarity.
  • What advice would you offer about further training? How can medical students prepare for this?” brought forward practical wisdom: seek mentors, stay curious, protect your wellbeing, and remember that your path doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s.

Many students shared how powerful it was to hear from doctors who’ve navigated the juggle—balancing career, family, and personal growth. The room buzzed with encouragement, and the sense of community was palpable. It was a reminder that while the juggle is real, so is the support.
