Streptococcus pneumoniae is a major cause of bacterial diseases among infants and children. Taipei city government provided almost 5000 doses seven valent Pneumococcal Conjugated Vaccine (PCV7) to the 2 to 5 year-old children residing in Taipei city between November 2006 and March 2008. Besides healthy children, children of aboriginal, low income family, or having the government listed major illness were included. There were six municipal hospitals plus 12 associated clinics attending this program. This program was public distributed via radio, television and newspaper. The trained staff contacted the children¡¦s parents by mailing, telephone, and physical visit. The program was approved by hospital IRB. A total of 4,992 children were introduced one dose of PCV7, including 219 aboriginals, 721 children from low income family, and 111 children having major illness. The result shows that nasopharyngeal carriage rate for Streptococcus pneumoniae is 21.66% with frequent serotypes: 6B, 19F, 23A, and 23F.
