AFMW Open Forum Mar 27 – World Health Assembly – Introduction and Orientation

This Open Forum will be an introduction and orientation to the World Health Assembly, given in the past, that delegate nominations are due in the first week of April.

BACKGROUND

Usually MWIA allocates a number of face to face places at WHA each year, and MWIA calls for applications. Some of you may recall being invited to our first AFMW Open Forum sessions on this topic.

Last year, the applicant list formed an ‘AFMW Interested in WHA’ list from which the AFMW Council chose, and informed our VP WPR to forward to MWIA. Then history turned. In 2020, after we had gone through a selection process, no-one could travel to Geneva, Switzerland as we had planned. AFMW Council then decided to open up this opportunity to all AFMW members, and some other MWIA members joined us on our Zoom meetings too. Together, we watched the WHA deliberations together over Zoom (many experiencing this networking media for the first time!), on three late nights running, watching the World Health Assembly live, at late night timeslots due to the time difference between Australia and Geneva. Admittedly it was a shortened WHA, but most interesting. A particularly topical feature was the politics around exploring the origin of the Corona-19 virus in China. AFMW Open Forums are are weekly Zoom meetings hosted by AFMW to provide a platform for members and Council to come together.
