QMWS100: QMWS Centennial Monthly Meeting Update #3

QMWS uncovers past letters from prominent Queensland women in medicine
Tags:

At our third meeting, Dr Lydia Pitcher, Dr Kathryn Mainstone, Dr Chloe Hang and Dr Barbara Woodhouse continued to explore the rich history preserved in the QMWS archives. We were thrilled to uncover past letters from prominent Queensland women in medicine, as well as general meeting books, committee books and receipt books dating back to 1929. Cataloging of these valuable documents has begun and will continue in future meetings. Dr. Barbara Woodhouse has been busy sourcing the best materials and methods to preserve the precious paperwork, with the expert guidance of Ms. Charla Strelan, curator of the Marks-Hirschfeld Museum of Medical History.

Another highlight of our last meeting was Lesley Williams’ book, “No Better Profession,” which chronicles the history of women doctors and the Women’s Hospital in Brisbane from 1888 to 1996. The book meticulously documents the challenges and achievements of Queensland’s pioneering female doctors, whose contributions were instrumental in shaping what QMWS is today.

We once again sincerely thank Ms. Lucy Reid, Senior Advancement Coordinator, for graciously allowing us to continue using the beautiful Emeritus Professor Mary Mahoney Boardroom at the Herston UQ Medical School for our meetings and for arranging convenient parking access.
