Many of us will have watched the dramatisation of the true story of Erin Brockovich, who initiated a legal case against the Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) over its culpability for the Hinkley groundwater contamination incident.

This is not a single case and many similar cases have been fought around the globe, although the majority commercial harms against the environment and as a consequence health, remain uncontested. Commercial gain at the expense of the health of the community, its biodiversity and the planet is being addressed in The Lancet Series – the Commercial Determinants of Health – see the Summary Report.

The original series, the Lancet Series on commercial determinants of health, was published online in the Lancet on March 23, 2023, and were reproduced by VicHealth.
