UNITE! Invest to prevent violence against women and girls

16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence event

Gender-based violence (GBV) is a global public health, gender equality and human rights issue that affects one in three women worldwide. It includes physical, sexual, psychological, and economic abuse, as well as harmful practices such as female genital mutilation and child marriage. Gender-based violence has always been a weapon of war. The consequences for survivors can be lifelong.

16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence is an annual international campaign that aims to raise awareness and mobilize action to end GBV. It starts on November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and ends on December 10, Human Rights Day.

The campaign was initiated by activists at the Women’s Global Leadership Institute in 1991 and has since been supported by the various civil society organizations. The theme for 2023 is “UNITE! Invest to prevent violence against women and girls”. The campaign calls on governments, communities, and individuals to invest in GBV prevention and response, and to show solidarity with survivors and advocates.

You can join the campaign by using the hashtag #NoExcuse on social media, sharing your actions and commitments to end GBV, and learning more about the issue and the available services and resources in your area. You can also support the work of organizations that are fighting GBV, such as medical women’s organisations and others. Together, we can create a world free of violence for all women and girls. ?
