Our annual Cocktail Party is our first big function of each year, and this year it was held on the 4thof April at the rooms of Dr Elizabeth Gallagher and Dr Tween Low, respectively this year’s President and Treasurer.

A big party such as this has many joys, first and foremost being the conversations, but it is also a membership drive, so that ANU medical students are invited and then invited to consider associate membership. Similarly, all the interns and hospital doctors, generalists and specialists are invited and hopefully our membership continues to grow.

Our President, Liz Gallagher outlined the program the committee has planned for the year.

We have already attended, complete with banner and membership forms, the Orientation Week Breakfast for Interns at Canberra Hospital.

In late May, there is to be medical education event, and this year we are stepping out of our comfort zone & into quantum physics and hoping to be listening to Prof Michelle Simmons, the 2018 Australian of the Year, on that topic.

Our Fundraiser for our charities is in the planning stages, as is our Annual celebration of Women in Medicine.

The ACT MWS Team for the Mother’s Day Fun Run on May 12th is in training. We have frequently entered the largest team in the event, but not yet, the fas. There is an annual ski weekend usually in August.

We have commenced our project on oral histories of medical women in our community, with Dr Linda Welberry our Secretary, having already recorded one with Dr Ann Hosking, our first ACT MWS  President.

Our research project is in its gestational phase, and we are tackling the topic of learning how to managing abuse in medical education if it’s reported to any one of us, and working in conjunction with Assoc. Prof Louise Stone.

The Committee continues to support our members who are working on the Asylum Seeker and Refugee projects in this country

As I said, one of the best parts of any party is the conversations and at the Cocktail Party, our most senior member present on the night, Ann Hosking  was talking up the issues of overpopulation and climate  change to everyone she talked with.

ACT MWS  Public Officer, and the current Senior Australian of the Year (2019), Dr Sue Packer, told that  us  that her mission for this year, in this very public role, is  to encourage one and all to continue to delight in children

And there were conversations overhead about obstetrics in Bangalore between a student, fresh from her elective there, and a longer term GP in Canberra, both of whom had been quite confronted by the issues of  continuing female infanticide in that country

I have to say it was a heady evening and a great start to our year for ACT MWS

By Dr Marjorie Cross, OAM.
AFMW Secretary 2017-2020
