On March 20, AFMW hosted a Parallel Event at the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW). This year, AFMW’s topic was “Australian Women Doctors: Climate Change Advocates and Activists”. We were delighted to present to the international audience a program including presentations by esteemed colleagues from AFMW and other important national organisations including Dr Kimberly Humphrey, Deputy Chair of Doctors for the Environment Australia; Dr Kate Wylie, Founder of Climate Medicine; and Dr Liz Rickman and Dr Sarah Burrowes from the Australian Lesbian Medical Association. Am happy to announce that I’m one of the first students to have participated and completed this short course delivered by the Centre for Digital Transformation of Health, University of Melbourne. As a member of this inaugural programme, I was amongst a midst of Technical Engineers, Government Health personnel, physicians, surgeons and allied health professionals. A truly interdisciplinary approach to healthcare systems. Headed by Professor Wendy Chapman, who is also one of the founders of Women in Digital Health ( WiDH).

Herstory this month features Dr Maria Boulton, General Practitioner business owner, QMWS / AFMW Committee. Many of us have seen Maria speak on behalf of GPs through her AMA role in QLD, making numerous media appearances throughout COVID-19 pandemic. Maria has contributed to Herstory in this week’s eBulletin and describes how and why she became GP in QLD, after having migrated to Australia from El Salvador in her teens. Maria talks about the role of clinical mentors and advocacy mentors in her life and how they have helped shape her career path.

It’s the first of its kind in Australia and has been adapted from the program developed in USA, and modified to suit our context. We have 27 fabulous women who have taken the opportunity to venture into a leadership and mentoring program specific to digital health over the next 6 months.
